Nursing Home Neglect

In the city of Atlanta, nursing home neglect and nursing home abuse are two activities that occur too often. In many people’s minds, these things are the same. The fact is that they are similar, but very different. Abuse implies that there has been injury with an intent to harm. Neglect, on the other hand, is a breach of care that results in injury or harm.

There are different types of nursing home neglect that occur in Atlanta and the rest of the country. There are four types of neglect that are commonly found:

  1. Emotional or Social: This type of neglect occurs when residents are left on their own, repeatedly ignored or even routinely snapped at by stressed staff.
  2. Personal Hygiene: This occurs when residents do not receive the assistance they need with bathing, toileting, brushing their teeth or other types of personal hygiene.
  3. Basic Needs: This occurs when a resident is not provided with adequate food, water or a clean environment.
  4. Medical: When medical neglect occurs, the patient’s medical needs are not attended to as needed or prescribed by a physician.

Warning signs of nursing home neglect include weight loss, injuries, malnutrition and dehydration. Changes in personality, mood and behavior can also indicate nursing home neglect.
